Boxcutter Boys - Coal River String Core

Lionheart Records

Banjo’s, guitars, mandolins, dobro’s (what?), bass… no I am not summing up the instruments bands such as Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly use, but by Aussies first, and latest, ‘string core’ outfit Boxcutter Boys. Recently this two men outfit released their debut EP on United Riot Records and a 12” of “Coal River String Core” is about to hit the streets through our buddy over at Lionheart Records.

I have to say, it is something… completely different from what I usually throw on my turntable, but I like it. Especially the A side featuring three Boxcutter Boys originals (“Bad News”, “On & On” and “Playing Dress Ups”) is killer with raw, authentic and acoustic music full of great melodies companied by Doug’s (Doc Evil) great vocals. But I don’t mind the B side either that contains four covers originally performed by Slade, Joy Division, Duran Duran (sure, why not) and The 357 String Band. Great versions in a very original way like you never going to hear them somewhere else, awesome!

If I have to compare Boxcutter Boys to anything else in the scene it would either be with Badlands’ acoustic work or Badlands’ vocalist acoustic side-project Solitary Way. But in all honesty, Boxcutter Boys are in a league of their own with a combination of amazing lyrics and ditto voice, original covers, fantastic and fun to listen to acoustic work!
