Falcata - S/T

Zerowork Records (CD) / Bigorna Records (7”)

Established in the summer of 2015, Lisbon’s Falcata is a brand new outfit fronted by vocalist / bassist João, who you might know from his excellent work in other Portuguese bands such as Facção Opposta and Asas Da Vingança. Togther with guitarist Inês and namesake João on drums, they recently put out their first, three-track release for Zerowork Records!

Currently only released as a CD-EP (although sold out by now), Falcata’s self-titled debut will be released later this year through Bigorna Records, known for their magnificent artwork and packaging! Since their releases are usually extremely limited (just like the CD version by the way, that was limited to just 100 copies) I hope I’ll be able to order a copy, because Falcata’s sound is absolutely killer!

Opener “On The Edge” immediately sets the tone for the rest of this record, with its thunderous, powerful drums. As soon as the bass, guitar and João’s strong vocals kick in, you know you’re dealing with yet another great band of both João hand and Portuguese soil. This powerhouse from Lisbon delivers hit after hit with the aforementioned track and the remaining two songs, “Modern Football” and “Dark Times”.

Each track has his own charm, “On The Edge” has the pounding intro, “Modern Football” is most close to me when it comes down to the lyrics and “Dark Times” has these superb, melancholic melodies that I love. But in the end all songs are bonded with a tight, brickwall sound, great vocals and stunning choruses, that make this first release one for in the books! Highly recommended, so stay on the lookout for when this release hits on vinyl, because this is an absolute must-have for fans of that hard, Rock’n’Oi! sound!
