Johnny Wolga – Goldhits

Contra Records

It’s nearly been a decade since Johnny Wolga’s last – and actual debut – album “Punk’s Not Back” was released, so it’s about time zee Germans released a new LP, right? Right! Good thing then that Contra Records just released the band’s sophomore album “Goldhits” and once again it’s all fun... and games?!

Because when you get the vinyl version of “Goldhits” – available on either white (100 copies), black or gold vinyl (200 copies of each color) – and open up the gatefold sleeve, you will find an actual boardgame titled “Saufi, Saufi, Schlafi, Schlafi” – how cool is that? Four sets of pawns and a dice are included with your record, so you get a soundtrack to your game night and game night in one – pretty damn cool indeed!

But obviously it’s the music that counts and “Goldhits” is once again punk rock craze from start to finish! Heavily influenced by the likes of the Buzzcocks and the Toy Dolls, Johnny Wolga also throws some Public Toys into the mix – with a fun, exciting and highly energetic album, that balances somewhere between good old ’77 punk rock and power pop, as a result! “Backdrop Boys”, “Modern Youth”, “It Ain’t Easy”, “This Is Not A Fashion”, “Mind The Policeman”, “Let’s Talk About Your Problems”, “Don’t Wanna Go Home”... “Goldhits” truly does include nür hits and there is no doubt in my mind that fans of the bands mentioned above will love this Johnny Wolga album as well!

Besides the vinyl version, “Goldhits” is also released on CD and cassette – but please note that these versions do not include the game. That being said, those versions are still worth picking up if you like some killer punk rock, but vinyl and boardgame lovers know what to do!
