The Malchicks – Winding Back Time

Crowd Control Media / Hipster Bait Tape Company

Southern Cali droogs The Malchicks are back after nearly fifteen years of absence. In order of their comeback, though in all honesty I never heard of them before, the band cleaned out the vaults, finding songs that were put on tape over sixteen years ago! This collection, a total of six songs, is now bound to be put back on tape through a cassette release by Crowd Control Media and Hipster Bait Tape Company with the appropriate title; “Winding Back Time”.

Now one (well, me) could ask why a relatively unknown band, with no particularly significant history, would choose to finally release sixteen-something year old songs, or get back together to begin with (new name, fresh start, the usual...). But as soon as the chorus of opening track “Lies You Sing” kicks in all these questions are forgotten, because this is some pretty damn catchy business!

Fortunately enough the above comment isn’t just privileged to the opener, but remains a returning theme throughout the release. Delivering a mixture of mid-tempo anthems and Durango 95-paced, rock ‘n’ roll influenced ultra-violence, The Malchicks nailed that American Oi! sound of the late 90’s and early 00’s (when these tracks were actually recorded) with “Winding Back Time”. Combining this with boisterous, easily to sing-along to choruses, songs like the aforementioned “Lies You Sing” or “Anthem Of Youth”, “Working Class Fairytale” and, of course, “Red White & Blue”, will have you chanting along in no-time!

Bound to remain stuck in your head for days, both band and label reckon this is just a small taste of things to come and I am more than curious to find out what The Malchicks can bring in the ‘new’ millennium!
