True Grit - Men Of Valour
Clockwork Firm Records
Got introduced to Toronto based True Grit last year through their split EP with The Warlords on Stratum Records. Both The Warlords and True Grit rocked this 7” and I was anxious to hear more of both. Seems like True Grit finished first when it comes down to that, because their debut EP “Men Of Valour” is here!
Or should I say finally here? Because it seems like there was some massive delay in the production of this release. The songs were already recorded in 2012 and the frontcover says November 2013, which might have been the actual release month because I first heard about this 7” coming out quite some time ago. Does it really matter? Nah, not really. I can imagine if November 2013 was the initial plan both label Clockwork Firm Records and the band were bummed out about it, but I bet they’re happy it’s finally out, and so should you be, and here’s why... this EP is fuckin’ killer!!!
2014 is an awesome year with about a dozen of amazing EP releases. And especially the debut EP’s are killing it this year with bands like Rile 9 Collective, Oxley’s Midnight Runners, Thunder And Glory and Sun City Skins belonging to my personal favorites of 2014. True Grit can add themselves to this list with their two tracks on “Men Of Valour” entitled “Shoemaker” and “Triggerman”, both extremely melodic and ultra-catchy Oi! / streetpunk tunes on a 45 from Canadian soil. And that is also the only problem I have with this EP, it’s 45RPM and each side only consists of one song, in other words... it’s too damn short! And no, that is not what she said, but if these guys can keep up with writing and recording top quality like this I wan’t a full-length record and I wan’t it fast!
“Men Of Valour” comes in a total quantity of 300 copies on black vinyl but with three different covers. They all look great and I had a tough time choosing my favorite one, but in the end it’s the music that obviously matters the most... and musicwise this 7” is also one of my favorite EP’s of 2014 so far, and that decission wasn’t that tough to make, at all. Buy this!
